Research Portfolio:
Project 1: Host to WWLLN and Research Collaboration (September 2021 – Present)
I serve as the host of Bangladesh’s sole sensor station for the Worldwide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), contributing to the global detection and monitoring of lightning activity. Through this station’s commissioning, I have secured access to WWLLN’s comprehensive global lightning dataset.
This initiative is conducted under a formal research agreement with Professor Emeritus Dr. Robert Holzworth, Director of WWLLN at the University of Washington. The project currently supports two PhD candidates and one MSc student, with limited capacity available for an additional MSc researcher. Interested candidates with relevant expertise are encouraged to reach out for potential collaboration opportunities.
Project 2: GNSS Ionospheric Observatory (June 2024 – Present)
As part of a cooperative agreement on ionospheric research between the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Italy, a GNSS-based ionospheric observatory has been established at MIST.
The observatory features a state-of-the-art Ionospheric Scintillation Monitoring Receiver (ISMR), operational since 25 June 2024. It provides continuous measurements of Total Electron Content (TEC) and ionospheric scintillation, integrated with data from 28 additional INGV stations worldwide.
This collaborative effort is jointly led by Dr. Claudio Cessaroni (INGV) and Dr. Md Golam Mostafa (MIST). Current research focuses on analyzing ionospheric scintillation effects over Bangladesh and the broader South Asian region, particularly during equinoctial periods. The project presently supports one MSc student, with opportunities available for additional qualified researchers to join.
Project 3: Development of Ionospheric Monitoring System for Bangladesh: Empowering Bangladesh's Geospace Research (Funding Authority: GoB, Ministry of Education, BANBAIS FY 2023-2025)
The project addresses the critical need for a localized ionospheric monitoring system in Bangladesh. The ionosphere, crucial for communication and navigation systems, often experiences disturbances affecting various technological applications. Bangladesh, situated in a vulnerable low-latitude region, lacks a dedicated system to monitor and predict ionospheric behavior in real-time. The project aims to establish a Regional Ionospheric Monitoring System, enhancing telecommunication infrastructure and navigation systems. It involves identifying existing ground and space-based infrastructure, integrating data collection systems, and implementing algorithms for real-time processing and analysis. By studying ionospheric variations and disturbances, the project contributes to space weather research and develops forecasting models, enabling early warnings and proactive measures during natural disasters. Effective collaborations with the national and international space weather research organizations will enhance data sharing and research efforts. Expected outcomes include an improved understanding of ionospheric behavior, a robust ionospheric database, advancements in space weather research, enhanced navigation system performance, and the creation of a comprehensive monitoring system. The project's methodologies involve continuous data collection, quality control measures, algorithm development, space weather analysis, navigation system studies, and ionospheric forecasting and prediction. Ultimately, this project empowers Bangladesh's geospace research, technology, communication, and disaster preparedness capabilities.
Project 4: Towards Establishing a Dense GNSS Network in Bangladesh (FY 2023–2025)
This initiative focuses on deploying a dense GNSS receiver network to support space weather monitoring and remote sensing. Four key scientific and technological objectives guide the project:
-
STO1: Deploy low-cost GNSS receivers for TEC estimation and ionospheric storm tracking.
-
STO2: Define requirements for timely warnings of ionospheric storm activity and geophysical conditions.
-
STO3: Exploit multiple satellite constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) for comprehensive TEC monitoring.
-
STO4: Validate system reliability and efficiency through real-time monitoring frameworks and case studies, leveraging additional GNSS data sources (e.g., UNAVCO).
Expected outcomes include a validated framework for real-time ionospheric monitoring, improved operational resilience for communication and navigation systems, and strengthened national capacity in space weather research.
Strategic Impact
Together, these projects form a cohesive portfolio advancing Bangladesh’s geospace research, communication infrastructure, and disaster preparedness. By integrating international collaboration, cutting-edge technology, and national capacity-building, they position Bangladesh as a proactive contributor to global space weather research and resilience.
